Characterization of Riparian

چکیده

The purpose of this introductory paper is simply to bring together in a general way some of the more important factors influencing riparian ecosystems. Riparii'.n ecosys tems are defined as those "on or by la."ld bordering a stream, lake, tidewater, or other body of water." Open water is the key to this definition and to the context of this paper. A riparian system is the interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It may also include adjacent vegetation that can influence both the aquatic system and the ter restrial-aquatic interface. Judging how much open water is enough to qualify an area as "riparian" depends on wildlife requirements. For example, how long must an intermit tent stream run to provide for the essential needs of key wildlife? Unfortunately, discus sion of such criteria is outside the scope of this paper. Instead, six kinds of environmen tal factors influencing the riparian system will be discussed.

Ecological Characterization of a Riparian Corridor along the Rio Conchos, Mexico

Restoration of riparian areas is an important step towards improving water flow and water quality of the Rio Conchos in northern Mexico. To provide background data for restoration decisions we characterized the ecological integrity of a 40 km long riparian corridor along the middle Rio Conchos. The characterization consisted of determining dominant species of trees and shrubs, structure, and ri...

Rapid assessment of the riparian zone habitat of river

Some riparian areas of the country are in danger of deterioration due to uncontrolled exploitation coupled with loose implementation of environmental protection policies and regulations. Muleta River, a major watershed in Bukidnon, Philippines, was assessed to determine the present condition of its riparian habitat. Abiotic and biotic conditions of the river were assessed. Other factors includi...

Characterization of riparian plant community in lowland forest of Peninsular Malaysia

A riparian zone is the land adjacent to streams and rivers, known to be one of the most important habitats in the tropical forest. However, not many studies have been done in Peninsular Malaysia and no information particularly in lowland forest. The purpose of this study was to characterize the plant communities where two sites were chosen, Pasoh Forest Reserve (PFR) which includes two logged-o...

Multi-temporal monitoring of a regional riparian buffer network (>12,000 km) with LiDAR and photogrammetric point clouds.

Riparian buffers are of major concern for land and water resource managers despite their relatively low spatial coverage. In Europe, this concern has been acknowledged by different environmental directives which recommend multi-scale monitoring (from local to regional scales). Remote sensing methods could be a cost-effective alternative to field-based monitoring, to build replicable "wall-to-wa...
